Detailed information about the visit
COMPLETE ITINERARY OF THE WALKING TOUR OF THE ROMAN THEATRE AND THE ALCAZABA
This 1 hour and 30 minute tour connects the Roman Theatre with the interior of the Alcazaba of Málaga, following a narrative focused on the conquest of 1487 and how the city was defended. The guide adjusts the pace on the ascent and tweaks explanations if there are many people at a particular stop, but the route maintains the same logical progression towards the upper part of the monument.
The tour begins at the Roman Theatre, where an introduction provides the historical context and explains the role of this space in Roman Málaga. From there, the tour connects to the Alcazaba to understand why some of the Roman material ended up integrated into the fortress and how it was reused in the complex’s construction elements.
Next, the tour enters the Alcazaba and follows the interior ascent, using the winding path to explain the Muslim defense and the Christian attack strategy during the siege. This section highlights points such as the Gate of the Columns, where the reuse of Roman materials is clearly visible, and the narrative unfolds from the defensive architecture to the inhabited interior.
As you proceed, the guide introduces the period when the Alcazaba was a residential neighborhood in the 19th and 20th centuries, with families living within its walls. The guide uses visible elements along the route to connect this part of history with the monument’s current use. At the top, before reaching the palace, the final line of defense is explained, completing the section on the siege and leading into the area where daily life is depicted.
The tour concludes in the palace area, with explanations of how the fortress was organized internally, how food was stored, where water was obtained, and where the city’s authorities met. The visit ends inside the Alcazaba, at its highest point, bringing the story to a close within the monument itself.
